The legend of Santa Claus dates back to modern-day Turkey in the fourth century when a Bishop named Nicholas who became a beloved Saint within the Christian faith. Little is known about the original Saint Nicholas, but the folklore and nostalgia of a jolly old Saint Nick decked out in red from head to toe with a belly full of milk and cookies did not begin until the late 1800’s in America. Everything changed when Harper’s Weekly hired a young artist named Thomas Nast to illustrate Santa delivering gifts to Civil War troops to lift up a nation at odds. Nast’s Santa would draw from Clement Moore’s description of Saint Nicholas from ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas (A Visit From St. Nicholas) with the familiar propaganda image of Uncle Sam becoming the image of the holiday season that we all know.
