Prior to 1906, the forward pass was prohibited in American football, making it a strictly run-heavy game to say the least. In the 1968 Kentucky Derby, Dancer’s Image crossed the finish line first but became the first winner to be disqualified after testing positive for a prohibited substance. With the result overturned, Forward Pass, ridden by Ismael Valenzuela and trained by Calumet Farm, was declared the official winner despite not actually finishing first.

As jockey, Oliver Lewis, saddled Aristides in the first KY Derby, his job was not to win but to set the pace. Owner H. Price McGrath had placed heavy bets on another of his horses, Chesapeake, and instructed Lewis to tire the field before yielding to his stablemate. But as Aristides continued to extend his lead late in the race, legend has it McGrath abandoned the plan and mouthed, “Go on with it, Oliver” across the rails. Lewis did just that, guiding Aristides to the first Derby victory in 1875.

DERBY TOUR 1945.
On June 9, 1945, Eddie Arcaro rode bay colored Hoop Jr., owned by Fred Hooper, over a muddy track against a field of 15 in Louisville. He took the lead going past the grandstand the first time and kept increasing it until he won by six lengths. Arcaro would win the fabled race five times in his historic career with two triple crown seasons.

May 1, 1976: Hall of Fame Jockey, Angel Cordero Jr. wins the 102nd running of the Kentucky Derby in just over 2 minutes atop Bold Forbes from the second post. I wish I could say there was a specific tie to Cordero or Bold Forbes…but the inspiration for this design was a vintage concert tee…and 1976 just seemed like a great year for concerts! On May 7 1994, over a sloppy track, the 10:1 odds thoroughbred Go For Gin was ridden by, jockey, Chris McCarron and took a half-length lead by the half mile pole and never looked back. Go For Gin won the 120th running by two lengths at a time of 2:03:72.
Retiring at the Kentucky Horse Park as a guest favorite greeter, Go For Gin passed away as the oldest living Derby winner in 2022 at the age of 30. Cheers, Go For Gin!

June 9, 1973: A three-year-old thoroughbred named Secretariat enters the final leg of the Triple Crown as the favorite and crosses the finish line as an immortal; winning by 31 lengths (the largest margin of victory in the stakes history). Ending a 25-year drought of a Triple Crown champion, Secretariat will become remembered not only as one of the greatest horses of all time, but one of the greatest athletes of all time.

31 blue and white boxes pay homage to the checkered silks of Secretariat’s Meadow Stables.
